In this video, we explore who regulates commercial highway transportation and who, specifically, is regulated. In particular, we address the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and how it is structured as a federal agency. We then discuss the agency's oversight of commercial transportation, and detail the distinction between interstate and intrastate commerce and why it matters in the industry. We explain why the term "commercial motor vehicle" is so significant to the federal safety regulations and which types of vehicles are regulated. Lastly, we discuss different types of exemptions from those regulations. In this video, we address USDOT registration and general compliance. Specifically, we discuss USDOT numbers and operating authorities, including who needs them and how to obtain them. We then discuss the FMCSA's minimum commercial auto-liability insurance requirements for motor carriers, and the various levels required based on the types of operations involved.
