Unless specifically exempt, CMV drivers must keep daily logs of their time spent off-duty, driving, and on-duty (not driving), and carriers must retain copies of those logs and supporting documents (e.g., fuel records) for at least 6 months. In many cases, drivers must keep these logs electronically using ELDs; however, in cases where drivers are not ordinarily subject to the ELD requirement but must otherwise keep paper logs, this document will serve that purpose.

This document satisfies the timecard requirement for short-haul drivers, and allows for a month's worth of entries per driver.

Commercial drivers are required to conduct pre- and post-trip inspections on any commercial motor vehicles they operate throughought the day. If they discover any defects during those inspections, they must document them on a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) and turn that DVIR into the carrier. Any defects that are likely to affect the safe operation of the vehicle must be repaired and certified before the vehicle can be operated again.
