Adrienne Camire appointed as new FMCSA Acting Administrator

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has appointed Adrienne Camire as the new Deputy Administrator and Acting Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). In this role, Ms. Camire will oversee FMCSA’s mission to enhance commercial motor vehicle safety, improve the efficiency of the nation’s freight and passenger transportation systems, and implement regulatory oversight.

Unlike a Senate-confirmed Administrator, an Acting Administrator serves in a temporary capacity and does not undergo the confirmation process. FMCSA has not had a Senate-confirmed Administrator since Robin Hutcheson, who was nominated by President Biden and confirmed in 2022. Prior to Hutcheson, Raymond P. Martinez served as Administrator from 2018 to 2019 under the Trump Administration. Following his departure, Jim Mullen and Wiley Deck served as Acting Administrators before Meera Joshi was nominated by President Biden. However, Joshi left FMCSA before receiving Senate confirmation. Hutcheson, who was confirmed in 2022, left the position in 2023. Since then, FMCSA has been led by Acting Administrators.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy expressed his confidence in Ms. Camire’s leadership, stating, "Ms. Camire is a dedicated leader who brings executive experience, vision, and a strong commitment to safety. I have no doubt FMCSA will continue to make our roads safer and keep America moving under her leadership."

Ms. Camire brings over 20 years of legal, regulatory, and compliance experience in both private and academic sectors. She previously served as Chief Counsel for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) during President Trump’s first term, where she oversaw legal services related to the Federal-aid highway program. She holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Brandeis University and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School.

Upon her appointment, Ms. Camire stated, "I am honored to lead FMCSA in its mission to prevent commercial motor vehicle crashes, fatalities, and injuries on our Nation’s roads. I look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to advance our shared safety goals."
